Perth Self Defence Courses are held on Saturday afternoons and last for 3 hours

"You will truly be hooked to the training classes"

"I am a personal trainer and an assistant instructor in Perth Self Defence. I started my life in martial arts at the age of 5. I first started learning conventional and competitive martial arts, chinese kick boxing, boxing, muay thai and wrestling. Through all the years of training I thought I understood martial arts so I wanted something different and challenging.
In 2005 I discovered a Perth Self Defence class in my local area. I went down to the class to train thinking I would be a top rated student but I was shocked and impressed at the same time, only 5 minutes into the class.

I saw the instructor demonstrate the martial arts system so professionally and explosively. I applied everything I had learnt in the past grabs, locks, punches, kicks but everything I did only resulted in me on the floor within a quarter of a second. I began to attend all the classes and continued to try my techniques on the instructor but each time I tried I learnt they don't work against this system. So I was encouraged to train hard in this system and this has been my attitude for the past 5 years. I still find wing chun  so amazing and this has pushed my knowledge quite far  in this martial arts system.

My knowledge as a fitness professional helps me to understand why this system is the most beneficial  training system  for self defence. It does not rely on size, strength or toughness  like  other martial arts. It's an intelligent scientific system that uses biomechanics, physics and physiology to understand how we can use our movements to defend ourselves. We also rely on functional flexibility in the muscles which gives you the most powerful and fastest movements.

"Wing Chun allows me to use my brain, it works my body and it enables me to defend myself."

For me, Wing Chun is not about becoming a so-called "tough" person to breakthrough bricks, to take punches as a brick wall would, or to become built like a brick house. It is none of that.
To try to be that way would be a ridiculous thing for me to do. I go to uni full time, I work part time and I'm not particularly big. My life does not allow me to fit into this image of "tough".

Wing Chun allows me to use my brain, it works my body and it enables me to defend myself. It is not a random collection of techniques, but a working self defence system. It has science, it has energy and it has skill.

Moreover, I am still young. I still like to be rebellious, to be strong and to show myself off. Martial arts is one way in which I may achieve such things. However, Wing Chun is the only way in which I may be able to achieve some of this when I am an old man - just as Yip Man did!
This is the beauty of Perth Self Defence Wing Chun and is why I do it.
